A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye. It affects
our vision. Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 80, more than
half of all people in the United States either have a cataract or have had
cataract surgery. Common symptoms of cataract are Frequent prescription changes
in your eye wear, blurry vision, colors that seem faded, glare and not being
able to see well at night. Sometimes cataract is also causes double vision.
A couple of factors are thought to cause cataracts include
aging, exposure to ultraviolet light in the long term, the use of certain
drugs, to diseases such as diabetes. The other factors such as smoking can
worsen cataracts.
Cataracts usually develop slowly. New glasses, brighter
lighting, anti-glare sunglasses or magnifying lenses can help at first. Surgery
is also an option. It involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with
an artificial lens. Wearing sunglasses and a hat with a brim to block
ultraviolet sunlight may help to delay cataracts.
There are several steps to prevent cataract that can be done
everyday, that is to take supplements and vitamin C every day, eat fruits and
vegetables rich in content carotenoid (contained in many yellow vegetables and fruits),
and smoking cessation.
Carotenoid is an antioxidant that has the ability to repair
damaged cells in the eye. This substance can be known from yellow, orange and
red color of fruits and vegetables. So the tomato, mango, papaya, pumpkin,
sweet potato and carrots are vegetables and fruits that contain lots of good
carotenoids for consumption.
Besides yellow vegetables and fruits are also rich in
vitamin C, and folate are useful to inhibit the clotting proteins in the lens
of the eye that lead to the decreased vision lens.
In addition to the consumption of vegetables and fruits, do
not forget to keep exposure to direct sunlight on the eye. The use of
sunglasses may help filter out ultraviolet light that enters the lens when the
weather is very sunny, and do not forget to leave the smoking habit.
So that's had the benefit of yellow fruit and vegetable for
cataracts and eye health. I also previously wrote about the Fruits and Vegetables Color Wheel and the Health Benefits. What do you think? Feel free to leave a comment and let me know.
